Running for president

Published in the Littleton Observer:

I would like to formally announce that I am running for the presidency of the United States. It was never my desire to make this statement but in order to give my great grand children something to hold over their friends I feel it is necessary.

In my younger years I led my life and really believed I would run for the U. S. Senate one day.  Life got in my way and that never happened.  Now if find out that I can run for President.

Sadly one of the best opportunities for me to run was in New Hampshire.  I say sadly because their primary was yesterday. Because I was not aware of this great opportunity, I did not make the deadline to run.  Had I run I would have been one of 45 people who did file for the presidency on the states Primary Ballot.

There were forty four people who did file for the primary.  Two were disqualified; the remainder was divided up equally between the democratic and republicans primaries. In the end there are twenty one names on each of the party’s ballots.

You are probably familiar with Edwards, McCain, Clinton, Romney, Obama and Huckabee.  You may not so be familiar with Gilbert and Crow.  Daneil Gilbert of Arden, NC and Randy Crow of Kelly NC along with John Edwards are the three candidates on the ballot from our state.

The requirements for entering the New Hampshire are simple.  Fill out a statement saying you are running for the office and you intend to file nomination papers along with $1,000 and you can be on the ballot.  The only other requirement is that you be registered voter in the town you register from.

You can file for candidacy by mail or in person.  If you register in person they allow reporters to ask questions.  If you go to the Web site, www.sos.nh.gov/presprim2008/index.htm, you can view a slide show of the candidates filing.  The one thing that is noticeable in these photos is the number of reporters interviewing various candidates.

What amazes me is that as simple as it is to get into the primary two candidates were disqualified.  That has got to be an ego buster, you do not have to have any real requirements to qualify and they disqualify you.

The mailing addresses of the candidates range from one end the country to the other.  In fact one of the mailing addresses is to Rome Italy.  Another candidate’s mailing address is Assisi Italy.  There is also a candidate from our namesake city Littleton, Colorado.

So if you want to provide your kids, grandkids or grandkids something to talk about and you have an extra $1,000 you might want to consider pacing your name on the next New Hampshire presidential primary ballot. If you would like to safe some money you could get on the Louisiana primary ballot for only $500.00.
